Breaking News! Visa-free regime – from January 2017

A long-awaited compromise on the terms of the mechanism that can be used to suspend the visa regime in Ukraine and Georgia.

On Wednesday, December 7, negotiations were held with the participation of the EU member states and the European Parliament, which resulted in a compromise on the terms of a mechanism that can be used to suspend the visa regime in Ukraine and Georgia.

The governments of Georgia and Ukraine have already introduced reforms that were a prerequisite for the introduction of a visa-free regime. Earlier this week, the head of the European Council said the EU was jeopardizing its credibility and reputation by allowing domestic political wrangling to postpone promised relaxation of visa requirements.

The head of the European Council, Donald Tusk, on Tuesday sent an official letter to the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schultz, in which he called on the legislature to compromise with national governments in order to unblock visa liberalization.

“Even if all parties have their own arguments and undoubtedly goodwill, it seems that we are approaching a dissipation of our joint efforts,” he added, noting that postponing visa liberalization is an unforgivable mistake.

According to experts, this suggests that already in January, Ukrainians will be able to enter Europe without a visa.
